Known issues with ESET products and Windows 10

  • Resolve common issues after upgrading to Windows 10 with ESET installed

The latest versions of ESET home and business products can be used with Windows 10. If you currently use ESET products and are planning to upgrade to Windows 10 from an earlier version of Windows, we recommend that you upgrade to the latest available version of your ESET product before installing Windows 10.

See our Knowledgebase article for detailed information about upgrading to Windows 10 with specific ESET product versions installed.

Important information for those who plan to upgrade or have already upgraded to Windows 10 Anniversary Update (Redstone):

Microsoft has changed their rules for detection of compatible applications in Windows 10 Fall (Threshold 2) released on November 12th, 2015, and the same rules are applied in Windows 10 Anniversary Update (Redstone). As a result, ESET product versions considered compatible in the past may be disabled after upgrading to Windows 10 Anniversary Update. Affected versions:

Consumer versions

ESET NOD32 Antivirus
(all languages)

ESET Smart Security
(all languages)

Business versions

ESET Endpoint Antivirus
(all languages)

ESET Endpoint Security
(all languages)

If you have already upgraded to Windows 10 Anniversary Update (Redstone), with an affected version of your ESET product installed, you will be prompted to upgrade to the latest version of your ESET product. Full functionality will be restored after installing the latest version.

Known Issues with ESET Smart Security and ESET NOD32 Antivirus

  1. Windows Defender suggests you uninstall ESET

You are not required to disable ESET to use Windows 10. See our Support News article for details about Windows Defender behavior and why you should not uninstall ESET.
  2. Windows 10 Insider Preview Program builds are not supported by ESET Smart Security and ESET NOD32 Antivirus version 9

If you use the preview builds with ESET, HIPS will be disabled and you will receive the error "Communication with driver failed. HIPS is inactive."
  3. "Error communicating with Kernel" is displayed after upgrading to Windows 10

To resolve this issue, make sure the ESET service is running. Click here for step-by-step instructions.

Known Issues with ESET Endpoint Security and ESET Endpoint Antivirus

  1. Security Notifications are not displayed in the Windows 8 environment

This functionality is still in development for integration with the Windows 8 environment (graphical user interface) and will be functional in future ESET releases. A service update will be distributed automatically to update existing products. Though notifications are not displayed, your computer's security is not affected negatively due to this issue.
  2. Incorrect priority of 'ESET: Computer shutdown after scan' window

If you have enabled shutdown after running a Computer scan and you are running an application in the maximized mode (for example, Internet Explorer), the window is not displayed on the top. In this case, you will not be notified of the running application during the shutdown process.
  3. ecmd.exe is not recognized as a trusted app

To run the ecmd.exe command line utility, click Yes in the Action Center dialog window.

  4. Issues with Windows Updates in Windows 10

In Windows 10, Microsoft has introduced a revised Windows Update procedure. This new procedure involves more granular application of updates for individual components, and can cause your ESET program to indicate that updates are required after required updates have already been installed. Click here for instructions to eliminate these notifications.
